Due to the Canada Day and Memorial Day holiday on Monday, July 1st, most City offices and facilities will be closed. Please note the following:

Garbage and recycling will not be picked up on Monday; it will be picked up on WEDNESDAY, July 3rd, in Georgestown.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR OUR FLEA MARKET AND BARBEQUE ON SATURDAY, JULY 20TH!!!

1. Volunteers needed.
The board of the Georgestown Neighbourhood Association has become considerably smaller over the past few months. Several board members have moved or are in the process of moving. It will be very difficult to host the usual activities (e.g. the annual flea market and barbeque) and to provide the usual services unless neighbourhood residents step up and volunteer to help. If you can volunteer to be on the board, to help out at the flea market and/or barbeque both in the weeks leading up to these events and on the actual day they are held, please contact us at georgestownneighbourhood@gmail.com

Flea market tasks for volunteers:
Sell raffle tickets: 10:00- noon
Hot dogs and drinks: 10:00 – noon

Barbeque tasks for volunteers:
Guarding the rentals in Davey’s Field: 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.
Watching over the vegetarian barbeque: 6:00-7:00 or 7:00-8:00
Watching over the meat barbeque: 6:00-7:00 or 7:00-8:00
Sell raffle tickets: 6:00-7:00, 7:00-8:00, or 8:00 – 9:00
Garbage duty: 7:00-8:00
Take care of the sound system: 6:00-7:30

2. Georgestown Annual Neighbourhood Flea Market and Barbeque: Saturday, July 20th, with a rain date of Sunday, July 21st.

FLEA MARKET: 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.(all streets from Military Road to Empire Avenue, from Monkstown Road to Bonaventure Avenue). If you have two items or two hundred to sell, you can set up shop in front of your house, or if you have flea market items, but do not want to sell them yourself, donate them to the Georgestown Neighbourhood Association. All flea-market donations should be taken to the corner of Hayward Avenue and William Street between 8:00 and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 20th. If you need any assistance or cannot come at this time, please contact us at georgestownneighbourhood@gmail.com

Come to the green space at the corner of William Street and Hayward Avenue for the Georgestown Neighbourhood Association flea market tables and for hot dogs, drinks, and treats, and then wander the streets of Georgestown to find treasures and bargains. A NEIGHBOURHOOD-WIDE EVENT!

BARBEQUE: 6:00-9:00 p.m. Join us for a community POTLUCK barbeque for Georgestown residents in Davey’s Field, the green space between Maxse, William and Hayward. WE SUPPLY THE BARBEQUES (one for meat eaters and one for vegetarians) and ENTERTAINMENT; YOU SUPPLY THE FOOD (and your own drinks, plates, cutlery… Please reduce waste by not bringing disposables!) Please bring whatever you would like to barbeque and another dish to share (salad, bread, dessert, chips, whatever.) Music will be provided by local and neighbourhood musicians. NO ALCOHOL, PLEASE. (We will be selling hotdogs and drinks.)

3. What’s happening on the lawn at Government House.

During July, August, and September, Government House will host activities from 12:15 until 1:00 on the lawn:
i) t’ai chi chih every Tuesday
ii) yoga every Wednesday
iii) wisdom healing qigong every Thursday

The Tool Library and Ordinary Spokes have teamed up! During the Tool Library’s open hours on Thursdays (5:30-8:30pm) you can tune up your bike, meet other cyclists, or purchase an affordable refurbished bike.

10. Eating in Georgestown.
a. The Georgestown Café and Bookshelf are open 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, and from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. 73 Hayward Avenue, 709-579-7134.

b. The Georgestown Bakery, 60 Hayward Avenue, is open from Tuesday until Friday, from 7:00 until 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 7:00 until 3:00. Bagels, baguettes, breads of many varieties as well as sweets! 753-8099.

c. The Hungry Heart Café, 142 Military Road, 738-6164. Open Tuesday to Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Brunch is served on Saturday.
i. Wednesday, July 3rd, Southern Small Plates. At the Hungry Heart, July means barbeque. They are hosting their first pop-up of the summer: Southern Small Plates. Reservations are available from 5:00-9:00 p.m. The menu will be posted on Facebook on Tuesday.

11. Raised Garden Boxes.

Stella’s Circle is making gardening a breeze! Once again this year we are selling 3’ x 6’ vegetable and herb gardens, custom-made and installed by participants of Stella’s Circle. Working together with the Conservation Corps NL, Stella’s Circle participants will build, assemble and install Raised Garden Boxes to make your gardening easy. 12. Roadwork in Georgestown.

The streets in Georgestown that are scheduled for work under the 2019 Streets Rehabilitation Contract 1 include the following:
*Hayward Ave: From Maxse Street to Catherine Street.
*The Dardenelles.
*Bonaventure Ave: From Merrymeeting Road to Howley Ave.

This tender is being advertised over the next two weeks and is scheduled to close on May 21st Construction will take place over the spring, summer, and fall.

13. Automated Garbage Pick-Up.

Households on some streets in Georgestown have been issued garbage receptacles for automated pick-up. If your house is one of these but is such that automated pick-up is not feasible (e.g., no front garden or a corner lot with service access on a street which will not have automated pick-up), you should call 311 to request a change.

Please also be aware that if you are physically unable to manage the new receptacles, you should also call 311.
14. Private resource teacher in Georgestown.

Spring is here, and Ordinary Spokes has bikes for sale. This DIY bike repair co-op shares the space with the Tool Library and repairs bikes which they sell for reasonable prices to help fund their operation. Stop by to have a look.
