1. Volunteers needed
The board of the Georgestown Neighbourhood Association has become considerably smaller over the past few months. Several board members have moved or are in the process of moving. It will be very difficult to host the usual activities (e.g. the annual flea market and barbeque) and to provide the usual services unless neighbourhood residents step up and volunteer to help. If you can volunteer to be on the board, to help out at the flea market and/or barbeque both in the weeks leading up to these events and on the actual day they are held, please contact us at

Flea market tasks for volunteers:
Sell raffle tickets: 10:00 – noon

Barbeque tasks for volunteers:
Watch over vegetarian barbeque: 6:00-7:00 or 8:00-9:00
Watch over meat barbeque: 6:00-7:00 or 8:00-9:00
Sell raffle tickets: 8:00-9:00
Take care of the sound system: 6:00-7:30

2. Georgestown Annual Neighbourhood Flea Market and Barbeque: Saturday, July 20th, with a rain date of Sunday, July 21st.

FLEA MARKET: 10:00am-12:00pm (all streets from Military Rd to Empire Ave, from Monkstown Rd to Bonaventure Ave).
If you have two items or two hundred to sell, you can set up shop in front of your house, or if you have flea market items, but do not want to sell them yourself, donate them to the Georgestown Neighbourhood Association. All flea-market donations should be taken to the corner of Hayward Ave and William St between 8:00 and 9:30am on Saturday, July 20th. If you need any assistance or cannot come at this time, please contact us at

Come to the green space at the corner of William St and Hayward Ave for the Georgestown Neighbourhood Association flea market tables and for hot dogs, drinks, and treats, and then wander the streets of Georgestown to find treasures and bargains. A NEIGHBOURHOOD-WIDE EVENT!

BARBEQUE: 6:00-9:00pm. Join us for a community POTLUCK barbeque for Georgestown residents in Davey’s Field, the green space between Maxse, William, and Hayward.
WE SUPPLY THE BARBEQUES (one for meat eaters and one for vegetarians) and ENTERTAINMENT; YOU SUPPLY THE FOOD (and your own drinks, plates, cutlery…Please reduce waste by not bringing disposables!) Please bring whatever you would like to barbeque and another dish to share (salad, bread, dessert, chips, whatever.) Music will be provided by local and neighbourhood musicians. NO ALCOHOL, PLEASE. (We will be selling hotdogs and drinks.)
2. Other flea markets
a. L’Arche Avalon at the corner of Barnes Rd and Mullock again, like last year (books and magazines; household items in the broadest sense; DVDs, and so much more!)
L’Arche Avalon is a community of persons with and without intellectual disabilities.Their goal is to open their first house in NL for adults with intellectual disabilities to live in family-like settings in homes with their assistants. The community does several Inclusive Activities on a monthly basis. Interested? Please add your name to our email list with

9. Ordinary Spokes: bike repair for all. (151 Empire Ave, at the Tool Library)
The Tool Library and Ordinary Spokes have teamed up! During the Tool Library’s open hours on Thursdays (5:30-8:30pm) you can tune up your bike, meet other cyclists, or purchase an affordable refurbished bike.

10. Eating in Georgestown
a. The Georgestown Café and Bookshelf, 73 Hayward Ave, 579-7134. Open 8:00am until 5:00pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 10:00am until 5:00pm on Sunday.
Note that they have opened an additional location on Long’s Hill.
b. The Georgestown Bakery, 60 Hayward Ave, 753-8099. Open from Tuesday until Friday, from 7:00 until 5:30pm, and on Saturday from 7:00 until 3:00. Bagels, baguettes, breads of many varieties as well as sweets!
c. The Hungry Heart Café, 142 Military Rd, 738-6164. Open Tuesday to Saturday, from 8:00am until 3:00pm. Brunch is served on Saturday.
d. The Rooms Café. 9 Bonaventure Ave. Opening Monday 10 am – 5 pm; Tuesday 10am – 5pm; Wednesday 10am – 9 pm; Thursday 10am – 5pm; Friday 10am – 10pm (Archives close at 5); Saturday 10am – 5pm; and Sunday Noon – 5pm (Archives closed).

11. Raised Garden Boxes
Stella’s Circle is making gardening a breeze! Once again this year we are selling 3’ x 6’ vegetable and herb gardens, custom-made and installed by participants of Stella’s Circle. Working together with the Conservation Corps NL, Stella’s Circle participants will build, assemble and install Raised Garden Boxes to make your gardening easy. For more information:

12. Roadwork in Georgestown
The streets in Georgestown that are scheduled for work under the 2019 Streets Rehabilitation Contract 1 include the following:
* Hayward Ave: From Maxse St to Catherine St
* The Dardenelles
* Bonaventure Ave: From Merrymeeting Rd to Howley Ave

This tender was awarded to Pyramid Construction Ltd. Construction will take place over the summer and fall, and early winter (until January).

13. Automated Garbage Pick-Up
The second phase of automated garbage should be completed and households issued garbage receptacles for automated pick-up should have received these. If you have any questions, you can visit or call 311 to request a change.

Please also be aware that if you are physically unable to manage the new receptacles, you should also call 311 or complete the exemption form:

14. Private resource teacher in Georgestown
