1. Heritage Week Event.

The National Trust in celebrating Heritage Week from February 19th to 25th. This year’s theme is “Heritage stands the test of time.” The Georgestown Neighbourhood Association is preparing an event, and the details will soon be available.
2. The Loop opens for the season.

The Loop at Bannerman Park is now open for the 2018 season, when conditions are favourable:
Daily hours 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., except during ice resurfacing (no skating): Monday to Thursday: 2:30-3:15 p.m.l Friday to Sunday: 1:15-2:00 p.m. and 4:00-4:45 p.m.

Call The Loop line at 733-LOOP (5667) to check if it’s open. The Loop line is updated during closures resulting from poor ice conditions.

All visitors must follow the rules and regulations posted around The Loop, and on our website, so all skaters have fun while remaining safe during the season ahead.

3. What’s on at the Rooms. Our neighbourhood art gallery, museum, and archives.

a. Hours.
Monday – CLOSED
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday – 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Wednesday – 10:00 am – 9:00 pm
Sunday – Noon – 5:00 pm (Archives closed)

b. Art Gallery opening reception. Friday, February 9th.

Join the Rooms as they celebrate their newest art gallery exhibitions. Free to attend; all are welcome. Exhibiting artists will be in attendance.

4. What’s on at The Lantern, 35 Barnes Road.

a. Iyengar Yoga Classes.
 Facilitator: Genia Sussex, Certified Iyengar teacher. B.K.S. Iyengar’s method encourages correct body alignment and precise movement to develop flexibility, strength and relaxation in the body and focus, clarity and serenity in the mind. b. T’ai Chi Chi and Chow Qigong.

i. T’ai Chi Chi is a series of 20 gentle movements designed to circulate and balance the flow of Chi, the natural universal energy within our body. The more freely it flows, the greater wellness and vitality we experience. It is yet another way to help yourself feel better on all levels, body, mind and spirit, using your own natural resources. Wisdom Healing Qigong (Chow Qigong) is a powerful integrated healing system that combines Western health practices and ancient traditional Chinese medicine in which body, mind and spirit are seen as one. Wednesdays, 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. The St. John’s Better Breathing Choir is a group for anyone living with a lung condition or breathing difficulties to sing together with family and friends in a relaxed environment. Parking close to building. No registration needed. No need to read music. No cost. Breathing exercises in a fun environment. Presentations by guest speakers. 7. St. John’s Tool Library.

Whether you’re a veteran DIYer or thinking about getting started on your very first project, the St. John’s Tool Library is here to help. They are a non-profit tool lending service for people who want to create, make, build, and grow. Your membership gives you access to a broad inventory of equipment, from lawn mowers to power drills, from stud finders to table saws, from gardening shovels to soldering irons – they’ve got you covered. Sewing Basics. Sunday, January 14th, at 7:00 p.m.
If you’ve never used a sewing machine or if you simply need a refresher, this workshop will build your sewing confidence. This workshop introduces you to the anatomy of the sewing machine and gets your started on bobbin winding, threading, stitch selection and sewing seams. 8. Ordinary Spokes: bike repair for all.
Ordinary Spokes is a community bike co-op located in Georgestown at 151 Empire Ave. They are a collectively run, D.I.Y. organization with a mandate to increase access to affordable transportation for everyone. They have a shop space fully stocked with new and used parts for do-it-yourself repairs as well as a wide selection of refurbished bikes for sale. 9. Eating in Georgestown.

When you dine at the Hungry Heart Café, you will have the option to add $2 to your bill. This money will go directly toward the production of a well-balanced, delicious meal for a Stella’s Circle participant. Hunger is often a challenge for many of the participants, and the Hungry Heart would like to leverage their skills and infrastructure to help address this issue. 10. St. John’s Winter Farmers Market. January 27th, February 10th and 24th, March 10th and 24th, April 7th and 21st, May 5th and 19th, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Lion’s Club Chalet, enter at intersection of Bonaventure & Mayor Avenues.

The vendors sell a wide variety of goods, including vegetables, meat, hot and cold prepared food, preserves and jams, pastries and sweets, breakfast items, art, jewelry, body care products, craft sand more. Plus everything at the St. John’s Farmers’ Market is made, baked or grown in Newfoundland and Labrador.
